What’s this?
LLMs bolted onto web apps are often given access to internal APIs so they can actually do things for the user, checking order status, resetting passwords, whatever the use case calls for. “Excessive agency” is what happens when the LLM has access to APIs it really shouldn’t (or has more permissions on an API than it needs), and can be talked into using them in ways the app’s developers never intended. Since the model itself decides when to call these APIs based on the conversation, all you need is a convincing enough prompt.
The easiest way to map this attack surface is honestly just asking the LLM what it can do.
Objective
Use the LLM to delete the user carlos.
LLMs are non-deterministic. The same prompt can produce different outputs on different runs. If something doesn’t land on the first try, rephrase it slightly and try again.

debug_sql jumps out immediately, a raw SQL execution API handed to a chatbot is about as excessive as agency gets. Ask it to use it:

No pushback, no confirmation step, it just ran it. Log in with carlos’ leaked credentials, go to the my-account page, and delete the account from there.
Lab solved. The vulnerability here isn’t really “prompt injection” in the classic sense, we didn’t need to trick the model into ignoring its instructions, it just straightforwardly did what we asked because nobody scoped down what it was allowed to touch.
